It all started with a simple conversation between like-minded individuals who shared a passion for cycling and a desire to make a positive impact. Nanjunda Palacanda, a specialist in distributed economics, made me enquire the possibility of designing and building cycles in India while reducing the complexity. This idea was discussed for deeper thinking with System Thinker Sujay Dinnalli, who saw the potential to create a standardized framework for bicycle components design and manufacturing, which we together named the Bharath Open Bike.

With the idea beginning to take shape, the team sought out the guidance of renowned academic and engineering expert, Prof TG Sitharam, Chairman AICTE. He was immediately taken by the project's potential and recognized the impact it could have on the country's transportation industry. As a result, after lending his expertise and leadership to make it a national level competition.

The team worked tirelessly to develop the design parameters for the cargo bike, ensuring that it was not only functional but also practical and accessible to a broad audience. With each member bringing their unique skill sets and expertise to the table, the Bharath Cycle Design Challenge began to take shape.

We are now building the momentum, to attract attention from industry leaders and experts who recognized its potential to revolutionize the transportation industry in India. The challenge was seen as an opportunity to not only encourage innovation but also to provide a platform for budding designers and engineers to showcase their talent and creativity.

The Bharath Cycle Design Challenge should become a national movement, inspiring engineers and designers across the country to embrace cycling design as a practical way of learning engineering. Its impact will be felt not only in the transportation industry but also in the wider community as it continues to drive innovation, create jobs, and promote a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.

The journey of the Bharath Cycle Design Challenge will be a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and determination. It shows that with the right mindset, anything is possible, and that by working together, we can create a better, more sustainable future for ourselves and the generations to come.

Thanks Nanju, Sridhar, Prof TG Sitharam , Sujay and so many people behind pushing this idea.

Welcome to the Bharath Cycle Design Challenge, where engineers and designers come together to create innovative solutions for sustainable transportation in India.

We are excited to see the impact that you can make through your designs, as we believe that bicycles have the potential to transform our cities and communities. Bicycles are an affordable, sustainable and healthy mode of transportation, and with your help, we can make them accessible to all.

As engineers and designers, you have a unique opportunity to create solutions that can solve real-world problems. We encourage you to think outside the box, challenge assumptions and push the boundaries of what is possible. Your creativity and ingenuity can change the game for sustainable transportation in India.

At BCDC, we believe in promoting distributed economics and local manufacturing, which is why we encourage you to use locally available components and materials wherever possible. By doing so, you not only support the local economy but also help reduce the environmental impact of transportation.

We also encourage you to embrace the concept of circular design, where materials are reused and repurposed at the end of their lifecycle. By designing with circularity in mind, you help reduce waste and conserve resources.

We want to thank you for being a part of this movement towards sustainable transportation, and we cannot wait to see what you create. Together, we can make a difference and create a more sustainable future for all.
